LAGO VISTA, TX — My dad passed away Thursday night … it had been a tough fight, but he was just so tired. He had waged a valiant battle these past 15 months since they found the lung cancer, but it had become clear in the last several days that it was over.
After a day of being almost unresponsive, he became alert in the evening, stood with the help of the medical people, gave my mom a strong, big hug and said, “I love you.” Then he was helped into his recliner, made comfortable with a blanket, and he asked them to take the oxygen mask off and replace it with a cannula. And he said, “What are we waiting for?” and he closed his eyes and drifted away as Bonnie Smith read from Psalms, and my mom held his hand.
I don’t know how he had the strength and grace to leave this life and enter what is next, rather than be taken.
Services are next Friday and Saturday in Hettinger, ND.
